Breast Cancer Can Be Prevented?

Breast cancer is one of the many types of cancer experienced by women. If cervical cancer can be prevented through vaccination, and breast cancer could be prevented?

"For primary prevention of breast cancer is still difficult, because the vaccine is still under development, so it can only be pursued through a healthy life," said Dr. Sonar Soni Panigoro, SpBK.Onk in the event of Eight Campaigns Increase Breast Cancer Awareness at Pondok Indah Hospital, Jakarta, Tuesday (05/08/2012).

Sonar dr explained to secondary prevention in the sense of finding breast cancer cases as early as possible so that the expectation of life. Unknown if it is found in stage 0 or 1 then until the sixth year there are 90 percent of patients who survive.

As for the tertiary prevention of breast cancer which has been found yet in an advanced stage, it will be aligned to the quality of life of these patients remained well.

"It takes time for these cancers can be detected, usually when under 1 cm is still difficult. But sometimes because they do not feel so inspected and did not suddenly grow up," said Dr. Sonar who was born in London 53 years ago.

Sonar dr said to reach a size of 1 cm it takes time for 5 years, because slow-growing if still small. But if the size is already large, the fast growing and hard to control if widespread.

Women tend to have higher risk of developing breast cancer compared to men because of hormonal changes in estrogen and progesterone had. But there is also another risk factor for breast cancer are:

A. Have a history of cancer or lineage ever had breast cancer before
2. Postmenopausal hormone therapy in the long term
3. When exposed to radiation therapy in the chest when a young age
4. Women in old age and not breastfeeding
5. Unhealthy lifestyles such as smoking, alcohol consumption and lack of physical aktvitas.

Until now the cause for breast cancer is unknown, but most cases are found at 40-50 years of age and are rarely found in less than 20 years of age. For women it is recommended to do breast self-examination (BSE) on a regular basis as the initial step of early detection.
