is the second largest cause of
blindness after cataract.
"In Indonesia, which suffered from blindness there is 1.5 percent, the cause of most of the second cataract and glaucoma," said Prof. Dr. Prof. dr. Dr. dr. Farida Sirlan, SpM as Managing Director of RS Mata AINI, Jakarta, Saturday (05/05/2012).
Prof Farida said that if the blindness caused by cataracts can be corrected with surgery and vision can come back, but for glaucoma blindness occurs and can not be permanently repaired.
This is because the damage occurs in glaucoma and optic nerve damage can not be repaired, but the blindness in glaucoma could be prevented if caught early so that treatment is not a lot of damaged nerves.
"The impact of blindness in people not only alone, but also have an impact on the surrounding family and socioeconomic either directly or indirectly," said Dr Amyta Miranty, SpM.
Dr Amyta reveal if there glaucoma it should always be controlled and reduced risk factors, if due to high eye pressure is lowered, if the result of vascular disease is treated.
While the treatment can be given to glaucoma eye drops, drugs taken orally as asetazolamid and glycerin, or the use of laser eye surgery.
"Glaucoma drugs should be used properly as directed, not having run out of drugs, used properly and the whole family at home or at the office take notice of the treatment schedule," said Dr M Ardjo Srinagar, SpM.
Dr Srinagar said that although glaucoma can cause blindness, but this condition could have been prevented. Find glaucoma at an early stage becomes very important.
