Usually people who are suffering from the flu feel very miserable and will try every means to relieve the symptoms.

No need to worry, because a team of Canadian researchers have discovered a new treatment based on zinc (zinc). According to researchers, zinc tablets can help patients reduce flu symptoms, though still no side effects.

"Although oral zinc tablets can affect the symptoms of flu, we do not have enough evidence to recommend its use in children," said lead researcher Dr. Michelle Science from the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto as reported from Health.com, Wednesday (09/05/2012).

To studies published in medical journals of Canada, CMAJ, the Science team conduct 17 randomized trials involving over 2,100 patients given zinc tablets or placebo to see any difference in the results of the two drugs.

From there, researchers found that patients taking zinc tablets showed a significant reduction of flu symptoms and duration of the emergence of these symptoms. Researchers also noted that higher doses of zinc that works better than low doses.

"Unfortunately, we found evidence that the benefits of zinc is limited to adults. But even in this group, there are still uncertainties related to clinical benefit," said Science.

Participants who took zinc tablets are also more likely to experience side effects, including the emergence of bad taste and nausea compared to participants taking a placebo, the researchers wrote.

But according to Dr. Robert Schwartz of the University of Miami School of Medicine, "We live in a world where people want instant treatment and recovery as soon as possible."

Yet this does not apply to these zinc-based tablet. Schwartz also said that her patients if you want to try zinc tablets, the drug was not toxic, but there is no evidence that zinc may improve cold symptoms faster than not doing anything.

For side effects, Schwartz said that it is not good in the mouth and nausea are common place when our digestive system is in contact with various types of heavy metals.
